The ByName Services are a showcase demonstration of our Vision for Free Internet Application Services. They represent the future of Internet Application Services.
Libre Services are an extension of the principles of the Free Software movement to the domain of Internet Application Services.
Free Software is completely transparent: it may be freely copied, modified and redistributed. Libre Services are similarly transparent: they are Internet Application Services which may be freely copied, reproduced, extended, and redistributed in their entirety.
For a complete description of Libre Services, see A Vision for Free Internet Application Services.
The ByName Services are the world's first Libre Services. They are a showcase implementation, demonstrating the concept and capabilities of this radical new model. They are fully functional, ready for immediate use and examination by anyone. To sign up for a free account, visit My.ByName.com.
The ByName Services are hosted and supported by Neda Communications, Inc.
The ByName Services provide continuity and consistency of access across all these environments. In particular, ByName provides fully integrated support for mobile access.
As with other ByName services, the user's mobile messaging functionality is fully integrated with all the user's other messaging modalities: home, office, web-based, and voice. Any messaging action a user may take in any one modality (e.g. send, reply, delete etc.) is immediately reflected in all other modalities.
Everything required to recreate the ByName Service is available at the MailMeAnywhere software distribution site.
The immediate purpose of the ByName Services is to support Operation Whiteberry. We want to gain converts to the WhiteBerry mobile messaging model, and ByName has been created first and foremost for WhiteBerry users. To support this goal, all WhiteBerry related features and all e-mail related services are in place and fully operational.
The goal of ByName is not to compete with existing Subscriber Services such as AOL. We are not in the Subscriber Services business - at least not today.
But in addition to its immediate purpose, we think the ByName model has tremendous potential. Since ByName is reproducible and redistributable, it has an inherent ability to evolve organically, in terms of both its capabilities and its scale. We expect the ByName Services to undergo a process of continuous growth and expansion.
This organic growth model is radically different from the existing, proprietary Subscriber Services model. Because of this, ByName has the potential to grow unboundedly, and ultimately reach the point where it can compete with the biggest of the traditional Subscriber Service providers. The growth potential of ByName matches that of the Internet itself: it is truly global.
Throughout the ByName websites we make reference to various other services, such as voice access, mobile web pages, information services, etc. Today these services are quite rudimentary, but they reflect our long-term vision for the evolution of the ByName Services.
The ByName Services are implemented as a pair of sister sites:
The My.ByName.net and My.ByName.com sites provide identical services; however they serve different purposes. My.ByName.net is a showcase site, demonstrating the ability of the Libre Services model to provide useful and reliable services. It is fully functional, stable, and supported. Use of My.ByName.net requires a paid subscription.
My.ByName.com is a public look-and-see environment, provided for test, try-out, and experimentation. Anyone may sign up for a My.ByName.com account; however the services at My.ByName.com are provided without warranty, and there is no guarantee that the service will continue to function as described or even remain available.
